Project: Thermalite Binder

Specification:

To produce an A4+ board binder with a printed and laminated cover containing 84 text leaves and 7 dividers, all printed in 4 colour. Trim, collate, 4 holes drill and insert into binder x 10,000 copies

Project Briefing:

With this client we work with them at the specification stage to ensure that their requirements can be met by our production facilities to provide the most cost effective solution.

The briefing for this product was to create an updatable and robust sales aid that would be used in the field and have to withstand regular handling.

We worked with the client to build the correct material specification and product finish that would meet their need.

Production:

The client provided final pdf artwork and we recommended the use of Sherpa proofs as they are colour accurate to 97%, the corporate colour palate being important to this client.

To build the outer folder we have printed the cover on a 130gsm silk and then matt laminated the outer. The material weight allows for the flexibility to wrap around the board back and the gloss laminate adds durability to the finished product. The build of the binder was handled by DBS as an outwork supplier.

For the text pages we recommended a 150gsm 75% FSC recycled silk. The weight adds durability to the product without going overboard on bulk, leaving plenty of room in the finished folder for updates without compromising the finished product. The silk finish allows for a great representation of colour on the sheet which is highly important as the product acts as a sales aid and colour specifier. The recycled content is in line with the client's corporate and social responsibility statement. We have managed colour reproduction to a very tight specification given the nature of the product, having recommended a couple of image retouches in accordance with the job imposition to get the best results.

The client has been involved in press-passing and colour management decisions to ensure compliance with corporate guidelines.

For the dividers we recommended 350gsm 75% FSC recycled silk. Using the same brand as the text pages allows for a good degree of colour management across text and dividers. The weight adds durability to the dividers. The die cutting was planned for the most efficient use of the printed sheet to reduce waste.

The collation of the job is a hand operation. A team of workers is organised to maximum efficiency and the job built. At this stage there are additional QA checks in place to ensure product compliance by a full check of every product at a determined interval.

The resulting product has been very well received by the client and was produced to quality and environmental constraints, to budget, on time.
